Berry Smoothie Bowl

What is your early morning pick me up? One of my go-to’s is a Berry Smoothie Bowl. Have you heard of a smoothie bowl? Well, if you’re thinking of a smoothie in a bowl, then you are correct! The fun thing about smoothie bowls is that there is room for so much creativity. That is what makes them easy and enjoyable to make. This recipe only uses a handful of ingredients. The ingredients used are berries, bananas, dairy-free milk, protein powder, shredded unsweetened coconut, crushed nuts, and granola. The protein powder helps to sustain the body until lunch. You don’t want to miss out on that ingredient!

If you don’t like some of the ingredients, then simply replace them with ingredients that you do like! If you have some fruit that might be going bad within the next few days, go ahead and throw that into the bowl as well. You can either blend it up or use it as a topping. It’s entirely up to you.

I remember during my last year in college, a smoothie bowl place opened right by campus. I was always ecstatic to go there after my morning classes. This place had endless flavor options. I made it a personal goal to try every bowl on the menu before I graduated. I succeeded! The recipe I am sharing with you today is a way to pay homage to one of my favorites, the Berry Bowl! This particular bowl used multiple types of berries. However, for this recipe, I only had blueberries on hand so that is what I used. You can use any type of berry that you love.

This berry bowl was topped with shredded coconut, cacao nibs, crushed nuts, and fruit of my choice. Typically I added papaya in addition to the berries that were already included. The bowls from this establishment tasted rather sweet. I believe the bowls included added sugar. And, LOTS of it! Of course, the added sugar made it delicious, however, I do not always like that. What I love about this particular smoothie bowl recipe is that I know how much sugar is going into it. It is all-natural sugar. No added granulated sugar for sweetness is allowed in this bowl! That only makes me sluggish.

To make this smoothie bowl, blend frozen berries, banana, milk, and protein powder. Pour the smoothie in a bowl and top with shredded coconut, crushed nuts, granola, and berries. It is a rather therapeutic dish to make. The blender pretty much does all of the hard work. Pouring the smoothie into a bowl is so satisfying. It’s also satisfying to use a spatula or spoon to smooth out the smoothie in the bowl.

As you get more comfortable making these, experiment with different types of smoothies. I love making different color smoothie bowls. For a brown color, blend up some kale with your berries! For an orange color, make a sweet potato smoothie! Have fun with it!

When I go back to visit my old stomping ground by my college campus, of course, I will pay a visit to my favorite smoothie bowl place. However, for now, while I reside 3000 miles away, this no-sugar-added Berry Smoothie Bowl will work just fine! Enjoy!
