Easy Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Who would have thought that something as simple as thick cheese between two slices of bread could be so tasty and so popular? Although this sandwich first made its debut as early as 1902, its name was not coined until almost 40 years later in the 1960s. The Grilled Cheese Sandwich has become so popular in fact that there have been restaurants solely dedicated to making and selling grilled cheese sandwiches in all kinds of different ways.

This is probably one of the easiest and mess free sandwiches to make. Most cheese lovers absolutely adore these sandwiches. It is also a great quick lunch or dinner option for kids. You probably already have most of the ingredients on hand to make this cheesy sandwich, such as bread, butter, and cheese. It’s that easy!

Now, this is a pretty basic sandwich, but it is oh so good. Use whatever kind of bread you like. I am using wheat bread because it is what I have on hand but, I am not here to tell you what kind of bread to use. Use whatever tastes the best to you. After all, you want to be able to enjoy your sandwich, so use bread you know you will eat.

For this sandwich, I am using a little bit of Classic American Cheese and a little bit of Medium Cheddar. I like the combination of these two cheeses and tried for years to find the perfect one for my tastebuds. Who says you have to use just one cheese? I certainly don’t follow that rule.

I find the best grilled cheeses are made in my cast iron skillet. I butter my skillet generously and lay down the bread in my skillet side by side, and then put a slice of cheese on each piece. I let it melt a little bit and then slap one on the pieces right on top of the other. This is helpful because now both pieces of cheese are evenly melted and the bread is also evenly toasted or shall I say, “grilled.” What you are aiming for is an evenly cooked grilled cheese sandwich.

It’s pretty easy to make a grilled cheese sandwich and it is also one of the basics in learning how to cook. I hope you enjoy your sandwich with whatever type of cheese and bread you love!

Ingredients

  • 2 slices cheese (any type, I use 1 slice of Medium Cheddar and 1 slice of Classic American)

  • 2 slices bread (I use wheat)

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Directions

  • In a small skillet, Heat 1 tablespoon of butter over low heat.
  • Spread the other tablespoon of butter on the inside portions of each slice of bread. Place cheese over top of buttered bread.
  • Place both pieces of bread in the skillet bread side down and allow the cheese to melt over top for 1-2 minutes.
  • Now, make it into a sandwich. Continue to cook for 1 minute on each side (2 more minutes total)
  • Remove from heat, slice diagonally and enjoy with tomato or broccoli cheddar soup.

Notes

  • Do not turn the heat up too high since the butter will burn your bread.
