Cast-Iron Skillet Cheese Pizza

Cast-Iron Skillet Cheese Pizza

I really hope you like this pizza. I was trying for a mixture of a Chicago deep dish and a regular pan pizza style.  Sort of like Chicago meets New York pizza style. So, essentially, I will call it a hybrid.

Yes, I mixed my pizza ideas to make this creation. I have made it before. It seems like each time I make this pizza, I cannot figure out if it is thick enough to be Chicago style or thin enough to be a slice of New York. Therefore, this Cast-Iron Skillet Cheese Pizza is a combination of both.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound 1 pizza dough, at room temperature

  • 3 tablespoons 3 all purpose flour (so dough does not stick)

  • 3/4 cup 3/4 pizza sauce

  • 1 cup 1 shredded mozzarella cheese

  • Italian seasoning for sprinkling on top

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 475°F. Lightly grease the bottom of the skillet.
  • With a rolling pin, roll out pizza dough into a 12 inch circle. Use flour so it does not stick.
  • Place in cast-iron skillet and top with sauce, cheese and Italian seasoning.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven. Slice and enjoy!

Again, simple is always best for me.  I used store bought dough, store bought sauce, store bought mozzarella cheese.  I added a pinch of sugar to the sauce and Italian seasoning to the top of the cheese before placing the pizza in the oven. I made sure my pizza dough was room temperature so it was easy to roll out and handle.

Once I added all of my easy ingredients, I then placed the cast-iron skillet, loaded with the pizza toppings, in my preheated oven and baked the pizza for 12-15 minutes at 475 degrees.  Smell is everything to me. My nostrils pick up all kinds of scents. Usually the good ones, especially if food is involved.  I have always had a keen sense of smell. I could just tell when my “Chicago Meets New York” hybrid pizza was just about ready to come out of the oven. I smelled the mozzarella cheese bubbling and filling my nostrils with anticipation of having a slice or two.

Personally, I like to eat this Cast-Iron Skillet Cheese Pizza with a fork and knife. Why? Because it is just the right consistency to dig in with showing a little proper food etiquette. Not that I judge if you eat with your hands. I do too for certain pizzas, but not with this one. I want to be able to savor every bite. I love cutting my pizza to make me think I am eating more than just a slice.  And isn’t that the way most deep dish Chicago style pizzas are eaten? Remember, this is a cross between pan and deep dish, but, thick enough for me to pull out my utensils. However, you choose to eat this pizza, go for it.

Feel free to add any extras that you like. There are so many different store-bought sauces and store-bought cheeses. If you are innovative and like to make your own sauce, I am sure it will be very tasty. Seasonings are the key. Use whatever cheeses you like to use. In my humble opinion, you can never have enough cheese. Who doesn’t love cheese and especially on pizza?

It is going to taste delicious whatever toppings you choose to use and however you choose to eat your pizza. You will add this one as a favorite and easy dish. I hope your hybrid pizza is just as tasty as mine and that you and your family and friends will choose to eat with a fork or pizza in hand while enjoying every single bite.
